Malcolm's Cartoon Corner: Panchito

This is portion I dub, Malcolm's Cartoon Corner. Where I show some of my favorite pieces of an animation. This week is an old forgotten classic, Panchito.

Panchito was made in 1955 by the vaguely remembered Mel-O-Toons.
It tells a story about a burro that can't bray. I'd tell you the rest, but that would spoil it.
In the beginning they mention a book called a "Tele-talkie". Which I suppose is something the theaters would give the audience if they wanted to read out the story or maybe it's something else. I used to watch this back when I was a an infant and looking back at this now, I realize that this wasn't intended for children. I thought it would be great to share this little piece of my childhood on the 'ol blog.

Enjoy!

  1. Awww, that was a cute and meaningful cartoon. Yep, a positive mindset can make a lot of difference to whether you succeed at something or not.

    Though I do think it was meant for children, despite the fact they included the concept of suicide in there. Back then, I don't imagine they weren't as strict with content censoring...especially outside of North America. Watching some European kids cartoons, they included things in there which would make American or British parents' jaws drop XD;

    As for the tele-talkie thing, while I couldn't find anything out about it, I figure it IS a read along book (especially since you hear a bell sound every so often, likely to indicate turning a page). First time I've known of it being used in conjunction with something visual mind - I'm more familiar with it being used on audio books.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. I remember the tele-talkies only being used for books. This is an interesting plot that has rings of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and Dumbo, where the main character is ridiculed for being different from the others.

    Where both characters were able to use their supposed difference to help those who were their antagonist. Rudy helps Santa ( you especially see this in the Rankin & Bass television version of Rudy where he helps Santa who originally treated Rudolph like crap, oh but when he needs some one to pull his sleigh and lite the way he calls on Rudolph.

    Dumbo saves the circus by putting out the Fire from the air dropping water. Panchito may be given a job to wake the soldiers in Iraq, or the president.
